New York is smaller than it seems. Protip: Buy a weekly subway pass, so that you can zip around anywhere you like at will.

Also, any of the many Borders (a bookshop) make for excellent downtime. They all have a Starbucks in - yes, there may be hundreds of starbucks all over the place, but it's quieter in a bookshop. And it smells nicer. And you can buy books.
